Tuesday, September 24, 2019: Beyond the Spin - A Deeper Look at Public Relations

Public Relations is one of the most misunderstood professions in our day. Are we myth-makers, spin doctors, damage control experts or mere publicists? Is our profession based on science, art or both?

Beyond the Spin – A Deeper Look at Public Relations offers participants an eye-opening journey into the underpinnings of a noble and much-needed profession that is, alas, all too many times poorly practiced. Come with questions and an open mind and leave with greater clarity and the motivation required to become a “PR Missionary”.

Topics include: Definitions and Models of PR; Sub-Disciplines of the profession like Media Relations, Social Media and Internal Communications; Environmental vs Evaluative Research; Media Training; Strategy vs Technical Skills; drafting a plan; myth-busting and more.

Presenter: Daniel Torchia, APR from Torchia Communications

Registration closes at 11:00 ET on September 24th.

Thursday, October 3, 2019: Extraordinary Missionary Month

Pope Francis has declared October 2019 to be Extraordinary Mission Month, on the 100th anniversary of papal teaching Maximum Illud. Glenmary Home Missioners Fathers Dan Dorsey and Aaron Wessman will present on the meaning of Catholic mission today, a brief look a Maximum Illud and its relevance today, and approaches to covering mission stories in your diocese, all sprinkled with lively stories from Glenmary’s home missions.

Father Dan Dorsey is President of Glenmary Home Missioners. He has served in mission parishes, directed novices, and been in various leadership roles in Glenmary. Ask him about why his nephew, Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey, considers him a favorite uncle.

Father Aaron Wessman, Glenmary’s First Vice President, holds a doctorate in Systematic Theology, with a focus on missiology, from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). His special area of interest is evangelization in an increasingly 'secular' world, which includes a consideration of the essential role the media can play in a 'secularized' world. Most recently he was pastor in the eastern North Carolina missions.

Registration closes at 11:00 ET on October 3rd.
