Msgr. John E. Kozar
ONE Magazine, New York, NY

During his term as president of CNEWA and as publisher of ONE, Msgr. John E. Kozar has been a champion of journalism, upholding transparency and accountability, affirming a commitment to excellence, and promoting the church’s evangelical witness globally — especially in some of the most embattled corners. From the slums of India’s “untouchables” to the camps of Eritrean, Iraqi and Syrian refugees, John Kozar has been an advocate for storytelling that informs as well as inspires outreach in service of the Gospel.

A “parish priest on loan to the missions,” John Kozar has promoted formation of persons as the cornerstone to heal a broken world. Through CNEWA’s various media, he has brought to light formation programs in places as varied as Kiev and Kerala, using journalism to remind readers that our world is uplifted continually by young people offering courageous gifts of faith and hope.

More than a publisher, he is in his bones a journalist who relishes getting a good story and sharing it. A photographer and writer, he has used his skills to take readers to far-flung corners of the globe to show the Gospel at work.

John Kozar has also redefined how CNEWA tells its own story, challenging us to articulate our work with clarity, optimism and zeal — emphasizing our “accompaniment” and encouraging a spirit of invitation. The result has been a dynamic approach to communications attracting new readers in all media. He has accomplished this with a spirit of openness, setting the standard for every publisher. Through his stories, Msgr. Kozar has kept readers informed and engaged, bolstering CNEWA’s credibility and winning readers’ loyalty and trust.
