Grants from the Catholic Journalism Scholarship Fund aid individuals currently working in Catholic media. Grants are available to any employee of a Catholic Press Association member organization. Grants are intended to help pay tuition costs related to pursuing studies in a field directly related to the applicant’s current or future position with the member organization. At the discretion of the CJSF Board, acceptable fields for study include, but are not limited to journalism, communications, social media, new-media design, information technology, graphic arts, publication design, marketing, advertising, business administration and theology.
Any employee of a Catholic Press Association member organization is eligible to apply for a CJSF grant, provided the applicant has been continuously employed by a CPA member organization for three years. However, preference will be given to applicants from the CPA’s Staff Member membership category. All applications must be approved by the applicants’ supervisors prior to submission. No applicant shall receive more than two awards from the CJSF Grant Program, and the total amount of grants made to any one individual shall not exceed US $2,000. No grantee may apply for a second grant without providing proof of successful completion of courses for which the first grant was awarded.
Application forms may be downloaded from the website, and completed applications must be returned to the CPA office no later than three weeks before the annual Catholic Media Conference.
Each year the CJSF Board will make grants ranging from US $250 to US $1,000. The number of grants available in any given year shall be determined by the CJSF Board, and the total dollar amount for grants in any given year shall not exceed the interest earned on the corpus of the Catholic Journalism Scholarship Fund. The size of individual grants shall be based on demonstrated need and the number of qualified applicants. Grants will be announced each year during the CPA’s annual Catholic Media Conference. Grants will be payable directly to the institutions or programs upon proof of recipients’ enrollment in qualified courses of study at accredited institutions or CJSF-approved programs. Any tax liabilities are the sole responsibility of the grant recipients.
Applicants selected to receive CJSF grants agree to help promote awareness of and donations to the Catholic Journalism Scholarship Fund by such means as writing articles for The Catholic Journalist, producing multimedia content for CJSF’s pages on the CPA website and social-media sites, giving interviews to CPA member publications, speaking at the Catholic Media Conference and/or other promotional activities as requested.
